The Talent Search Program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. This program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education (www2.ed.gov).
Talent Search provides a variety of projects and services to its participants including but not limited to:
tutorial services, providing information on postsecondary education, student financial assistance, exposure to college campuses, assistance in preparation for college entrance exams, completing college admissions and financial aid applications, and more (www2.ed.gov).
Talent Search is more than just a replication of Upward Bound programs. Talent Search also provides activities for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, workshops for families of the participants, career exploration and aptitude assessments, and educational or counseling services to improve the economic and financial literacy of participants. Talent Search encourages persons who have not completed education at the high school or college level to enter or re-enter by providing academic, financial, career, or personal counseling including advice on entry or re-entry to secondary or postsecondary programs (www2.ed.gov).
In order to be eligible for Talent Search, students must be between the ages of 11 and 27 and have completed the fifth grade.
